You might try activating the Magic Sysrq Key and using that instead: http://www.linuxhowtos.org/Tips%20and%20Tricks/sysrq.htm Currently, the key's set in /usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-default.conf and the default value is 16, which doesn't allow all keys. To get a fully functioning Sysrq Key, change that to 1. To activate it without a reboot, run this as root:

echo "1" > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

BTW, when I started to compose this, Thunderbird wanted to send it only to the poster, not the list. Odd.
