I had a mail from Cole explaining what happened. It's a combination of user error and a UI bug in virt-manager. I had wanted to specify the virtio drivers for Windows, but gave the directory instead of the ISO file. However the error message from virt-manager said the problem was with the Windows ISO and didn't mention the virtio problem. IOW it's a case of "wrong error". I corrected my mistake and it now appears to work as before. IMHO it would make sense for virt-manager to detect the problem as soon as the user specifies the wrong thing.
