Yes there could be. Upon further testing: After restarting the problem doesn't occur again. After 2h of uptime the issue comes back but slightly less lag. Copying was not laggy, but after attempting to close the window the screen froze for 2 seconds, and any operation after that was laggy again( as in frame drops and stutter). The lag disappeared as soon as the copying completed.

probably not immediately helpful: could be "buffer bloat" somewhere
along the way?
