I've had similar results with my old Brother HL-2070N, i.i., ity can be made to work with one of the built-in printer definitions on Centosand Fedora. I've also set up a few multifunction Brothers, and the first time I downloaded all the various blobs and followed the web-site's instructions for hacking the system to make them work. Why did I do this? because I didn't think there would be existing "free" driver files for scanner and fax.... then I found (on Brother's driver site) a single download installer that when run asks you what printer model you are installing, then downloads the various blobs and does the system hacking for you. it has always worked afteward, too! Sorry, I can't remember its name, but could probably find it if someone needed me to. (this particular netbook I'm using now has developed some kind of dementia, however, wherein it sometimes spews an error message when printing from a GUI app, and just this week seems to have been sending the print jobs into a bit-bucket. but that isn't related to the ease of installation. this system is up to date Centos7, but thenso is my main desktop, upstairs, and it prints fine.
