There was an error in firefox that sounds a lot like this. It was because of gcc6, which uses a new standard for c++. That new standard breaks some code that used to be legitimate. Whenever I would play movies, until they got it fixed, they would do this randomly. Perhaps that is the cause of this behavior you are seeing.
