Here's an idea. Get an account on DigitalOcean. Create a droplet using their "One-click apps". They have one called "Joomla 3.6.2 on 14.04" (14.04 is a version of ubuntu).
Explore the Apache config and the Joomla config. Checkout permissioning and ownership. Probably faster than playing "what if".
If you pick the smallest droplet it's $5 per month charged by the hour. If it took a week to figure it out you'd be out less than $1.25 and you would have learned how to have a host in the cloud at the same time.
