I'm coming late to this thread, but you will always be better with an external antenna port, since it gives you options, one of which is a longer antenna. Another is to remote the antenna to a better location by means of a coax cable. Or, of course, both!
This advice is good only if there are no moving parts. With a single antenna, a small change in location can make a big difference in signal strength. MIMO helps a lot, but getting a good pattern using movable antennae is difficult, so if you can't get good coverage with one router you need multiple routers.
