With nvidia drivers on my system, I'm pretty sure I shouldn't
be trying to use swrast, so as root I ran "ldconfig"
and neverputt started working again.

So some rpm somewhere must be missing an ldconfig call
in postinstall. Anyone know how to detect which
package that might be?

Since it sounds like you have the proprietary NVidia drivers installed, I would expect it's one of those packages.
