FWIW, my Acer Laptop reports "Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver
loaded?" when using "synclient -l". Yet my touchpad works just fine. KDE has a setting
for disabling the touchpad, but it doesn't work. Lucky for me my laptop has a "Fn+F7" key
combination which turns off the touchpad hardware wise.
Thanks, Ed!
Mine is a Synaptics, and it works great with "synclient TouchpadOff=1"
so I think I'm good!

There used to be a program called synaptik--notice the spelling--that
would turn the scratchpad off.
See if you can find it anywhere.
