I checked and in my current session mate-settings-daemon was running. But it was not checked as an auto-startup program. Probably something else caused it to run, perhaps my launching the keyboard properties program. Anyway, I checked it to run at startup and the volume keys were active without my taking any action. > > While you're in there, you may find a bunch of things that auto start > that you don't use.
