'Claws Mail will not let you write and send HTML emails or other kind of annoyances' http://www.claws-mail.org/documentation.php?section=general But you can display html messages with Fancy plugin

I can do without the html but with my poor vision I need the contrast I get with white text on black.

However, dnf downgrade thunderbird, solves my immediate problems but I can see that Thunderbird changes are going in the wrong direction and I'm going to have to find a replacement ...
