Hi Rick,
I haven’t used vnc for performance reasons in many years. I'll look back into
nomachine's product, to be honest I kind of forgot about it but it looks like
they only closed the source but still offer a free release.

I use vnc quite a bit because of two reasons: the ability to share
the root window of my X session (if you use the vnc module with X) and
the ability of vncviewer to use ssh tunnels to route the traffic around.
Performance is pretty decent. It degrades if you're on a slow link, but
for what I've needed it for, it's fine. I'm pretty much of a CLI guy so
ssh is my primary tool of choice. I only use vnc when necessary.

My mom paints herself into a corner fairly regularly on her laptop and
calls in a panic. I use teamviewer with her (she's on Windows 7) to take
control and fix things. It works pretty well cross-platform and because
it sorta uses a stun/turn mechanism, it can traverse firewalls without
too much difficulty. I surely don't want to try to walk her through
trying to bugger Winblows firewalls. I'm not super-skilled at that
myself as I typically only use M$ crud if someone holds a gun to my
(or my dog's) head.
