Actually, I've installed the unhide-passwords Firefox addon,
and this allowed me to verify that I was indeed typing the correct PIN.
In spite of this, the bank told me it was incorrect.
Could there possibly be an error creeping in
between laptop and bank?
is it https: ??

I see that Chrome has a similar addon, Gumshoe,
so my next step is to try that.
