I thought smplayer is the gui front end for mplayer and mpv.
mpv does not seem to have a gui front end.
Smplayer is *a* GUI front-end. Mpv is independent (I don't even have
smplayer installed).

smplayer allows the user to choose mplayer or mpv for playing the media.
