I may be wrong, but I think the two use different sets of codec
libraries.  I've certainly come across cases where one will play files
that the other will not.

And VLC seems more computationally intensive, to me (takes longer to
load up the program, and start dealing with files).

BINGO!!!
This is especially true if you compare running vlc and smplayer on windoze.
