Btw, isn't the recommended way to edit grub by changing /etc/defaults/grub and then running grub-mkconfig or is that for something else? > Yes, in fact I said "/boot/grub/grub.conf should contain", not "edit the file and add". ;-) If you can make it to contain the stuff by using /etc/defaults/grub it's perfect, but I never really understood how that flow is supposed to work, as it seems that installing a new kernel, options are just copied from the existing kernel to the new one.
