It's probably a lock left over from the failed start.  That is, the new
version of audacity thinks audacity is already running because the
failed version left a lock set when it exited.

Look in your home directory for a dot file, probably something
like .audacity, or a .lock file in an audacity folder.  Remove it, and
audacity should start if there are no errors.
