Use alsamixer -c0 to look at the settings for alsa.  It sounds like it
might be muted.  The left and right arrow keys move between settings.
Pressing m turns it on or off.  You want to be sure that Master is on.
The up and down error keys set the volume level.  Set it at the edge
of the red.  ESC saves and exits.  Then do the aplay again.

If the above doesn't fix the problem, this is beginning to sound like a
hardware error.  It doesn't make sense that it would be coincidental
with the upgrade, but your results suggest that from the viewpoint of
the OS, it thinks that everything is OK.  And it appears to be.  The
correct driver is loaded.  Alsa thinks it is sending to the device
successfully. Only no sound.
