Sorry to say NO.
I should add that I've no problem to play .wav files with play command
from the sox package. The problem must be with audacity :-(
I don't use audacity myself. Does it have the ability to select
different backends (phonon, etc.) and if so, have you tried changing
to other backends to see if it's limited to one of them?
