You pointed to the right direction: too many open tabs > (hundreds, I mean) were causing the issue. My hunch is you were swapping which caused the issue. Hundreds of tabs should not be a problem. I regularly have that many tabs open without any problems (197 at the moment). It could be one of the tabs was consuming a lot of memory forcing FF to swapping.
