First, I would test if you can reach the mailserver at all: telnet smtp.gmail.com 25 If this succeeds, then nstall tcptraceroute (or something similar) and run it against the mailserver/port you're trying to reach. It will show you where your packets are being blocked and thus help you to narrow down the underlying cause.
