No, you need an editor. IIRC, that specific message usually means that
the command lines in the makefile are not started with a TAB
character. They're probably just spaces.
Adjust and retry.

I just compiled it manually without the use of the makefile.
It works.
Mathew Miller suggested:
gcc -D__COPYRIGHT\(x\)= -D__RCSID\(x\)= leave.c -o leave
And it works!
