I also use the command:
: set syntax=on
and
: syntax on
with no results.

I removed vim-gtk-syntax-20130716-3.fc21.noarch, started a terminal
session, checked a script, and the highlighting was on.
Don't get it.
So, the fire trucks can return to the station.
