I have vlc installed. If I drop a DVD in, the icon for the disk does appear on the desktop, but clicking on it simply opens the file browser. Which isn't very useful.
I can start vlc manually, and tell it to play the disk, and that's fine. But too many steps.
After creating a desktop icon that executes "vlc /dev/sr0", I now have a permanent icon on the desktop, that starts dvd playback, after the dvd is inserted, which is fine, but I wouldn't expect non-technical users to figure out how to do this.
Incidentally, the desktop's "Parole media player" can't handle the playback, and pops up with a "gstreamer back end error, could not get title information for the dvd", but vlc is fine.
