You can still use tar. 

After running the tar zcvf .......
run the command tar ztvf .........

to test it again.  The benefit of tar over rsync is that you can save it to 
other filesystems, such as NTFS, memory stick etc. (Although I would never 
trust a memory stick to be my only version)
