I always use openssl. eg:
cd /etc/pki/tls
openssl req -new -outform PEM -out certs/z9m9z.htt-consult.com.crt
-newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout private/z9m9z.htt-consult.com.key
-keyform PEM -days 3650 -x509 -extensions v3_req
Makes a good server self-signed cert. Client certs are not much different.
