It sounds as though it is trying to find a hotspot to connect to, and can't.
It can't because you still have to specify not just the ESSID but also
the password or passphrase. See that padlock icon? That's what that means.
Does your desktop have a particular way to manage such passwords? KDE
has KWallet for that purpose, so that means you have to set one up. I
don't know what GNOME does about that.
