I did exactly this, but did not realize that the kernel had been updated since I started my computer, so after the reboot the kernel was now at 3.17.7-300, and it, of course, did not find my newly compiled module :) Perhaps this happened to you also?

I then compiled it for the new kernel, but for me the problem is still there, a noisy fan. I will investigate further...

Regarding Nicks question, here I get:
$ modinfo nouveau
filename:       /lib/modules/3.17.7-300.fc21.x86_64/updates/nouveau.ko

Which is the file I compiled.
