Fedora21.. As a test, you could try changing the default application to something like gnome-open, or xdg-open (which are a file handler utilities). Your emailer would palm off the file to the handler, and *it* would open it with the default system application for the type of file it is. That may help you isolate whether it's a Thunderbird problem, or something else. That sort of thing can also help with malformed content, such as emails that don't say the attached file is a PDF file, but describe it as being some unknown type of binary file.
