I did manage to install the Xfce packages. Unfortunately, switching to an Xfce desktop, at the login prompt, brings up a corrupted Xfce desktop, that still has many Gnome bits running, somehow, including gnome-vfs2, whose latest bug is the one that's driving me away from Gnome.
Fortunately, creating a new user results in a clean Xfce desktop that works, so that's what I'll be doing.
