Ubuntu is your best choice. It is supported for 5 years and you can set to 
install security updates automatically. If your lady friend is not tech savvy 
than why bother about updating software at all if there is pressing need for 
it. Ubuntu have both free and non-free packages available often in their 
repos. And if she searches for anything Linuxy Ubuntu is bound to get the 
first on search results. Unity is simple to use and Ubuntu comes with a good 
set of software. The more updates a system receives more surface area is there 
for breakage.
