How do I get my weekly patches done?

The solution provided by Alchemist worked, though each command had to be entered separately like this:

pkill yum
pkill rpm
rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db.00*
rpmdb --rebuilddb
sync

rather than all on one command line.
