I have an old F17 Asus Eee700 and trying to hook it to a USB TTL UART as

I am getting garbage characters. Not all the time, but particularly at
the beginning. I don't see this on either of my two F20 systems:
Lenovo x120e and Asus Eee900.
I can't easily upgrade this Eee700 and I would be happy just using F17
screen. But is this likely to be OS or hardware?

$ man 1 screen
encoding/charset
# cu -s speed -l /dev/ttyUSB0
$ man 1 cu
No 'cu' to man. find it in uucp. Who uses uucp anymore??? ;)
thanks. following these items see where they take me. Today, my Lenovo
unit won't work with screen. garbage characters. My Asus Eee900 also
with F20 works fine. Maybe because of a fresh boot. So there is
something going on here. It could be 'screen'
