Re: Cannot unlock screen after prolonged period of time

As a separate issue, it looks like ctrl+alt+f1 (or any of the F keys) does not switch to a virtual console, so I can't try the above. Are there common issues that prevent either virtual consoles from spawning or users switching to them?

Try getting to a shell, e.g. control-alt-F2. Login as root. Use journalctl -f to get a current "tail" end of the journal log, note the time. Now go back to tty1 and try to login. Back in tty2, you can maybe see some clue as to what's going wrong. If not, quit following with control-c, then do something like:

journalctl -n100 > journal.txt
fpaste journal.txt

-n100 will include the last 100 lines of the journal; you can adjust that as needed.
