That's what I'd figured, but it's always best to check. Have you tried connecting to that box from a different computer?

That is what I said in the OP. It works on my 2 F20 notebooks, one an Asus Eee900 (similar hardware, but more recent).

The man page for screen lists several possibilities. I'd RTFM and check all of the possible locations.

You where thinking screen as perhaps the problem, and you are probably right, I was thinking USB drivers, particularly serial support. Some of the 'garbage' I was seeing were really modem commands. Now thinking about it, that COULD be screen trying to figure out what kind of modem it is connected to....
