It's a perfectly horrid model for running services. With each change in
release, you don't just have to update the OS and software, but you've
got to migrate all your data, too.
This only applies, if the database application packages has changed in
incompatible ways. This sometimes applies, but in many cases does not apply.
This however also would apply, if you had manually installed a database
application package, and have to upgrade your application, because
upstream or else is telling you, the version you have been using is
insecure.
