I believe that usermod(8) requires *all* supplementary groups to be mentioned in its -G parameter. -G, --groups GROUP1[,GROUP2,...[,GROUPN]]] A list of supplementary groups which the user is also a member of. Each group is separated from the next by a comma, with no intervening whitespace. Also, you will need to log out and back in of your desktop session before your session "knows" you are in a new group. -- Garry T.
