I'm not a gamer but I thought I'd check out the Steam engine on F20.
This is on the RPMfusion nonfree repo and installed with no problems.
However when running it I get a popup error saying:

OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.

For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457.

A glance at the above URL reveals that the problem is probably due to
Steam being a 32-bit binary and I only have 64-bit libraries. I'm using
a GT630 video card with the NVidia proprietary driver (also from
RPMfusion).

Is this solvable without jumping through many hoops?

This would be best asked on the RPM Fusion mailing list since both steam and the binary Nvida drivers you installed came from there...

To answer your question, I bet you just need to install the 32bit version of the nvida libraries. On my system I have:

xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-331.49-1.fc20.i686

installed.
