Your reply got me to thinking instead of panicking. I realised that I had an entry in /etc/fstab for an external hard drive which is not present at the moment. This is a headless system that only gets rebooted about once every 3 months and the fact that the HD wasn't connected hadn't shown up as a problem until this reboot. Sorry for the noise. I guess I should open another thread, but does anyone know how to auto-mount an external HD ONLY if it's present? Thanks again... Mark
