Right....  But, if after doing #5 you unplug the cable, wait a
bit (30 seconds or more), and then re-plug does the second
attempt succeed? If not, output of ifconfig please.
If it took anything more than 5 seconds to sort that out, I'd be
concerned, or very peeved at crap design.  These days we have
computers with GHz processors, not kHz.


Yes, of course.  But humans have a very bad habit of under estimating
time.  I tend to err on the long side.  But that isn't germane to the
problem at hand.

look at a watch or clock while you do it. a little practice and
you will be close on up to several minutes.
