> still can't boot normally and user "rfg" is empty anyway. if you have '/home' as a _partition_, it should show up in root path when you 'change path' in rescue mode. if you boot a 'live' disk, to find what you have in _home_ in _partition_, you will need to mount partition to to see user directories. if you do have home in a partition, check '/etc/fstab' to insure that it is still there. if '/home' is a partition, when you boot system, do you see it mount in 'mtab'? also, look in '/etc' at files 'group', 'gshadow', 'passwd', 'shadow', and 'shadow-npw' to see if user is still listed.
I can't even guess why this has happened and it looks to me like
