Just to update anyone that may (or may not, from the lack of comments) want to know:

FreeType in Fedora 20 uses a new font renderer and the Cantarell font, which is the default in Gnome, behaves badly with regard to font weight darkness and a few hinting errors.

There is a Red Hat bug[2] and upstream has been informed[3].
