FWIW, I use Lili USB creator (linuxliveusb.com) for things like that,
if I can. (Some distros aren't always happy booting when creating them
with Lili).  It gives you the option of setting up persistent storage
and I've created bootable CentOS drives (including 6.5) several times
with it and it works fine.
