OK, you are missing some packages (not from R): sudo yum provides */libpng-config yields: 2:libpng-devel-1.5.13-2.fc19.i686 : Development tools for programs to manipulate : PNG image format files Repo : fedora Matched from: Filename : /usr/bin/libpng-config So install: sudo yum install libpng-devel I suspect this takes care of the other error also. The professor needs to be asked what use this sort of "learning" how to use a package is? Monkey-see-monkey-do is all one will get.....throw in a non-standard scenario and what will the students (or the professor himself) do? Nevertheless, HTH!
