Thanks for that. Tried that, and a new .config/libreoffice folder was
created when I start
libreoffice, but again, when I try to configure the default language I
get this error message:

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve
property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-size' of type `GtkRequisition' from
rc file value "0" of type `glong'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve
property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-spacing' of type `GtkBorder' from rc
file value "0" of type `glong'

No errors, at all,
$ libreoffice --version
LibreOffice 3.6

$ mate-about --version
MATE Desktop Environment 1.6.1

You can try to create a new user for testing purposes, and see if it'd
turn up errors.
Besides which video module is in the question?
$ lspci -nnv | grep VGA -A10

Thanks again, very much. The results of the commands are below.

$ libreoffice --version
LibreOffice 3.6

$mate-about --version
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
MATE Desktop Environment 1.6.1

It's pretty obvious that you're missing the RANDR extension in your X
system. Lots of things will break if that's missing. You should check
your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see what the problem is. I don't have an
ATI graphics card (three nVidias and an Intel here), but you should see
a line sort of like:

	[   127.252] Initializing built-in extension RANDR

in that log file (the number in the square brackets will be different...
it's a timestamp). If you don't see it, get that sorted out first.

$ lspci -nnv | grep VGA -A10
