There are two things that immediately come to mind. The first is that you don't have the right driver for your graphics card. The symptoms you describe used to happen to me all the time, but in recent fedora releases, it's been pretty good at figuring out the right driver. You might need to tell folk what laptop you have and what kind of graphics it has. The other possibility is that this is a desktop issue rather than a fedora issue.
