You have to set your PS1 in your ~/.bashrc such that there are no colour escapes. This is what I do: if [[ $TERM = dumb || $TERM = vt100 ]]; then export PS1="${PROMPT}${JOBS} \W> " else export PS1="${PROMPT}${BOLD}${PINK}${JOBS}${YELLOW} \W> ${CLEAR}" fi where, the variables PROMPT, BOLD, PINK, etc are defined earlier.
