If you are seeing a pae kernel, you must have a 32-bit Linux installation.
If you have a 64-bit CPU (and ONLY then) you can use the pae kernel, which
will give you access to memory above the 3.6GB that a 32-bit CPU is
limited to, and so you should then use that kernel.
