      did you try to boot into runlevel 3 or 1 using  the grub menu?

    I don't know how to do that either! Linux Rescue from the grub
    screen gives a black screen with an unresponsive blinking cursor.

    
    Typing an "e" produces a menu, but I am lost there ...
