Most common scanners should work fine....Nothing is flawless. I use an
HP snapscan and it does the job. You didn't mention what you want to do.
I haven't tried anything more complicated than scanning an image so I
can't comment on OCR/slides/multiple pages...etc. But a good rule of
thumb for something like that if you want well developed drivers is to
use something a little dated. Check HCLs on Sane/GIMP/CUPS(whatever you
plan on using) find the most common one for the feature you're looking for.

I've tried several older HP scanners and got the same inconsistent results. The 3570c I'm using is dated enough that I had to use the Vista driver when I gave up and moved the scanner over to a windows 7 machine. I'm simply doing some basic scanning of simple documents and pictures. I'll scan once and then things go south once I move to another item. I recently changed my motherboard and CPU and figured maybe the older board, which did have some USB stability issues, might have been the cause. To my dismay, nothing has changed.
